The reading today was John 4: 4-42
Fiona uses Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well to show how Jesus builds a relationship from a few initial words spoken at the well to the point where the Samaritan woman comes to faith and brings other people to him.
In building relationships, Fiona asks us to examine prejudice and encourages us to think about how open-minded we really are. She shows how Jesus takes time to get to know and talk to the Samaritan woman and shows how we all need to avoid being judgemental, and our need to engage with people and see them through the eyes of God. In talking with people we need to find words that do not divide but unite, that do not hurt but heal. She reminds us of the words of Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
